April Newsletter
Dear Brethren;
HIDDEN TREASURES
The long silence of the jungles and highlands has recently
been shattered by the sounds of airplanes soaring overhead, chain
saws buzzing through virgin timber and outboard motors racing
up the jungle rivers. Men are seeking to extract the HIDDEN TREASURES
of this great land. They look for gold, oil, copper, lumber and
others forms of wealth found here In abundance, but not readily
accessible. Of course these modern day prospectors bring with
them all kinds of worldliness to fill their empty lives with so
called "pleasure" thus bringing some very difficult
temptations to new born Christians.
We come seeking souls in need of Jesus Christ- also found
here in abundance. HIDDEN TREASURES in the jungles and highlands
of Papua New Guinea are waiting to be claimed for Christ.
There remains the difficult task of:
-going into the bush to live with them In places where
daily needs are not easily met;
-learning to understand their ways of doing things without
becoming critical;
-learning to speak their language or at least some reasonable
facsimile;
-attempting to meaningfully present the Gospel and encouraging
them to accept its deliverance;
-teaching the Word of God so that they will be able
to resist the worldly influences pressing upon their way of life;
-establishing functioning congregations with functioning
leaders so that the message of redemption is carried on and noised
abroad.
These HIDDEN TREASURES do not bring financial gain or
security, but there are spiritual and physical rewards both in
this life and the next which cannot be purchased for any amount
of the world's wealth.
As we outline goals for the days to come, we cannot suppress
the urge to send out an SOS to Christians at home to sacrificially
give themselves, their time, their wealth, their sons and daughters
and their own strength toward this task. How grateful we are to
hear of those who faithfully stand with us In prayer and who are
doing all In their power to see that these dark areas In Papua
New Guinea can have the light of the Gospel and that these HIDDEN
TREASURES can be claimed for the glory of Jesus Christ. It is
a worthwhile venture and a worthwhile investment that will pay
rich rewards In glory.
The month of April saw several of our brethren from Lee
stop in to visit with us on their way through to various areas.
The Rick Nilands were up to visit a congregation in Kogi where
we have 30 Christians worshipping. Next the David Locks and Lorna
Fairley came through on their way to Waipi in the Enga Province
(180 miles from us where Kathy went on her first bush patrol).
Coming from Lae David had lost the muffler and the generator off
his vehicle. Since parts were not available for immediate repairs
they took our car while we rang Goroka for the parts. They were
in Enga for 7 days to strengthen the brethren. On their way back
through he picked up his good vehicle and left me my vehicle to
repair. The day David came back through Joe and Rosabelle Cannon
came to spent the night, Rosabelle's brother and his wife, Troy
and Patsy Cannon, from Searcy Ark. had come and Joe wanted to
show them the Highlands. They returned to Lae the following day.
The work here in Chimbu continues to be strengthened.
Our brethren are beginning to mature some and to God be the glory.
We went to the movie house here In Kundiawa this month
and thought you might like to share our experiences, For 60¢
adult, 30¢ child we were able to view two full length screen
epics.Jailhouse Rock- Elvis Presley (BW) and Sheepmen-Glen Ford.
We were the only white-skins there. The seats were straight back
benches and for the admission fee we received the following free:
95% present smoked; laughter during the serious scenes and silence
during the funny parts; no roof on the toilets behind the screen
thus hard to see when someone was in the toilet with the light
on (all the time); 60 sec. pause between reels (either to change
the bulb from one projector to the next or to change the extension
cord); police were all called out to go to a fight area; a pickpocket
was chased around the benches until the film was stopped and the
lights turned on the catch him. Now where else could you got so
much for so little !!!
We continue to solicit your prayers on behalf of our
work as the Lord continues to open doors of opportunity for us.
In the Master's service
