Dear Brethren
This month has really been packed full of excitement!
Some bad news and some good news. BAD NEWS: We did not reach out goal of 550
for VBS this year. GOOD NEWS: We averaged 358.4 (you should have seen the .4
fellow), high of 404. 95% of our teachers this year were the local brethren
here. We were acting as back ups only. We had two baptisms.
During August another Village Leadership Stabilization School School was held.
It was conducted at Bima Piau, 37 men and one woman in attendance. We had five
baptisms. I was scheduled to teach with Art Ford from Lae but there was too
much material which needed to be printed so Lance taught the Books of Peter
for me. He said he would teach if I would translate the outline for him.
The Curtis Harrison family arrived back Aug 19 to renew their labors with the
Goroka team. Curtis still doesn't have full use of his hands and legs but he
crutches along and is going to be an invaluable assistance in the work here.
Sailas Kazo began fulltime labor with the congregation here in Goroka last month
but I just haven't had the time to sit down and help him plan out his work and
Curtis now is working with him. I have been spending more and more of my time
with the printing. (Yesterday my right thumb got caught up in the press and
by the time I got the press shut off I had gotten my thumb inked up and it was
lodged on the impression roller. Just call me cucumber thumb. By the way, the
press had an even ink distribution.)
The Fran Johnson family also arrived in. Aug and they will be coming to Goroka
also to work. With. the Harrison's 2 girls and the Johnson's 3 girls this gives
us 5 collator for putting together the books we are printing here. I had some
of the local brethren helping FOR A WHILE. I was spending more time straightening
out their mistakes than it would have taken me to do it right the first time
With the new arrivals we have Lance Friis leaving to return to the land of
McDonald's, PIZZA HUT, and JUNK FOOD. He has been with just under 18 months.
We figure to replace him here in the work we would have to import and hire at
least three baboons. Seriously though he has been a super worker. Some of his
accomplishments include: rolling our only bus, backing into a parked truck while
teaching one of our men to drive (need I say more). God bless you Lance as you
go back, and find that nice girl you are looking to marry.
The movie Superman finally was shown here in Goroka this month. The Sunday
after the film we had a local fellow with a red towel tied around his neck trying
to outrun one of our buses. We knew tight away that he wasn't the real Superman
whereas he didn't have any tights on.
By the time you receive this newsletter the PAPUA NEW GUINEA WORKSHOP will be close to:
PAPUA NEW GUINEA WORKSHOP OCT 5 &6
MEADS CHAPEL CHURCH OF CHRIST
1251 ANTIOCH ROAD
NASHVILLE TENN 37211
PLEASE PLAN TO ATTEND
Please also remember that SEPT 30 has been marked as PRAYER DAY FOR PAPUA NEW
GUINEA. If possible we ask if a special collection can be taken on this day
for the Papua New Guinea work needs.
We need: $1400 to pay off our new typewriter for the printing work; $1500 to
pay for 11/2 tons of paper; for
$400 for 200 Bibles in New Guinea Pidgin; $2,000 for costs to print a concordance
compiled by Joe Cannon for the New Guinea Pidgin New Testament.
Stacks of literature ready for collation into the Topical Index
This bullitin is sent out to over 650 addresses. If everyone who get this would help with just $10 we could pay off these needs. Or if every congregation represneted would help $100 this would pay of these needs. We might even have enough to buy a paper cutter we need, for $400. We could even foreseeablly pay off some of the work fund debts (ie monor things a Bibles, Song Books, clas material, tyres for buses.)
Stats for August: 9 bapt; 12 restored; Sun ave 140; Thurs ave 284
