Volume 2, No. 8 August 1979

Dear Brethren;

"You ask for it, you got it, a workshop." Due to popular demand we will bring. to you live the "Papua New Guinea Workshop." Never before have such grace been brought together on one stage. Such names as; Joe Cannon, John Wallace, Sam Kirkpatrick, Rick Niland and a host of others will be there to share with you in this rich feast. (Though it is about New Guinea we will have to limit your feasting to the spiritual not physical aspects.) A weekend to be spent with SOME (sorry I won't be there) of the greatest showbiz personalities in the mission field. (I have always told you the work here is like a three ring circus with us being the main attraction.)

Plan now to attend and find out why all the critics are raving about the Papua New Guinea Mission field. Facilities are limited so plan now and don't be one of those who had to be turned away because only 50,000 will be allowed in. Roll call be will taken.

Wow! ! With all this excitement going on I'll have to rest for a minute here and let Kathy talk with you.

KNOTES-FROM KATHY
During July the children were out of school for a week on holidays, We decided to go to Lae for a few days. It seems the kids hardly ever get to go places. We took swimming suits but only got to use them once. It's rainy season in Lae and they had over 25 inches of rain the 5 days we were there.

While in Lae, Tobey and I saw (and bought) a new treadle model Singer sewing machine. It straight stitches and zig-zags. It's a lot like the one I learned to sew on at home. This machine can go anywhere Tobey and I go in the work of the Lord with no problem with electricity (or lack of).

Tobey had some dental work done in Lae also. This was the main reason for going actually. The dentist drilled through the top of a crown, cleaned out the new decay and put in a temporary filling. Therefore (because of the wherefore) there will be another trip back to the dentist in a couple of months.

After we got back from Lae, Catherine Scott came driving in from Watabung with Andy as the passenger. Andy was having fever and chills with afternoon sickness. He had several tests run but they couldn't find anything unusual (they did rule out pregnancy). Catherine has my respect for being able to drive over the pass and the highway that's like a snake through the mountains.

The kids (in all the classes) are benifiting from the colors that have been sent. My group (27yrs old) loves to color' the handout pictures and then make airplanes out of them after class.

Glenn Farmer left on the 29th to return back to Ft Worth (via Australia). We have appreciated his love for the Lord in coming here for the past 16 months. We pray that he'll find the work he desires as he continues to serve the Lord.

During the month of July the Goroka congregation began the full support of a local man to work with the congregation. Sailas Koza has been preaching and teaching classes all along in addition to his job with the Local City Council. This is a great step forward as this will have the congregation doing more of what they should be doing and we can be busy doing other things. So far two deliquents members have returned to the flock because of his work, Usigo and Teri Dui.

Statistics for July: Sunday Worship 98 with 30 Christians; Collection averaged K47 ($65); Thursday night worship, 207. We had 1 baptism (Kepa, sister to Paul Kumul) and 13 restorations.

During July the US $ nose dived again dropping 40 on the New Guinea Kina in value. It is beginning to rally back and now we get 680 on the $ or we get 680 New Guinea Kina for $1000 US. Not too good. As Kathy said Glenn left this month and we will miss him. He was doing most of our printing and now it's back to Paul and myself.. We were able to complete the Topical Index in Pidgin English before he left though. Our next big book is a concordance in Pidgin English. Please pray with us that we might receive the $2,000 needed to print it.

Oh, how the garden does grow. We have the vegies really coming along; corn, squash, spinach, collards, cabbage, tomatoes, green peppers, radishs. A lot of our tomato plants have come up where we throw our bad tomatoes off the back porch. We even have lots of passion fruit vines coming up. Almost anything will grow here even for me.

Please keep in mind the Special Sunday of prayer on September 30. We are asking that brethren throughout the world pray with us and for us on this special day. We are also asking congregations to ear mark this fifth Sunday contribution toward the New Guinea work needs, printing, busses, class rooms, general needs. Please mark this day and the weekend of Oct 5-7 now. Further information will be given later.

Yours in the Master’s service,

The Huffs
