VOLUME 6; No.3
MARCH 1983
Dear Brethren;
Greetings in the name of the Lord
By now some of you are saying, "but I just received the March newsletter the other day". Oh, yes you received "All March but this is "the" March newsletter. The first one you received was the February letter which had been delayed.
BIBLE SCHOOL FACES CLOSURE
Our Bible Training School in Goroka was notified in late February that the land
we were leasing (trying to buy) was no longer available and that we had to vacate.
The owner wants to sell it to a beer brewer. The matter has been turned over
to the government who has demanded that the owner compensate us over $23,000
for improvement to the property. When Andy Scott first started the school the
land was all bush with no buildings. If the owner (and it looks like he might)
pays the amount to us then we have to find another place for the school. Pray
with us that the Lord open our eyes. 'This school is very, very primary to the
goal of sharing the Gospel with all of Papua New Guinea.
WE USED TO COMPLAIN ABOUT NOT GETTING TO GO ANYWHERE
While working in New Guinea one of the things we miss is the ability to get
into the car sometime and just go somewhere different. WE DON'T MISS IT NOW
. In February we traveled and traveled and .4124 miles In 24 days. We visited:
FOUKE ARK.; TEXARKANA; MT PLEASANT TX.; SKILLMAN AVE.DALLAS TX.; KAYENTA ARIZ.;
GALLUP N.M.; LUBBOCK TX.; ROSWELL N.M.; BROWNWOOD TX.; ANSON TX.: SULPHUR SPGS.TX.;
DEQUEEN ARK..
WHO SAID THEY WEREN'T A TRAVELING SALESPERSON!
My dad was a traveling salesman and I always vowed that that was not for me.
But there are some things I do for the Lord I wouldn't do for just anyone. So
we are on the road selling our work to brethren. This last month while Kathy
and I were on the road the kids stayed here in Joplin with their grandparents
and continued their schooling. We missed Terasa's 12th birthday which she celebrated
on the 20th. Can you believe it 12 ?
GOD ALWAYS PREPARES US
I know now why the Lord has been training Us on the roads in New Guinea, so
that we can survive the reads here. In February alone we almost had two (2)
head-on collisions, and had a four car pile-up BEHIND us while we were driving
in downtown Dallas. (No I didn't cause it either.) All the foul weather either
went around us or we seemed to skirt around it. Oh it's good to be back.
KIDDOS GIVE TO NEW GUINEA WORK
In January I forgot to mention a very exciting fact: while we were in Shawnee
Okla. the 6th grade class presented us with a can of coins they had been saving
for some time for the New Guinea work. These kiddos had saved up $22.46. We
really appreciate this and the money will be used toward Bibles. Thanks kiddos!
While in Dallas I was able to locate a firm which specializes in 1250 multilith printing presses like we have in PNG. I bought rollers to overhaul one and switches for the other (so that when I shut it off it goes OFF).
FIGHTING IN GOROKA
Several things have been happening in Goroka since we have left. Last month
they had to call off the last night of a Good News I meeting because of tribal
fighting . In fact they closed the whole town down. A local politician was stabbed
in the head by his brother-in-law. The police caught the man (stabber) and the
day he was to be arraigned the courthouse was overrun by the tribe of the politician.
They were trying to "PAYBACK" by killing the accused, they didn't.
Several hours of fighting resulted in a policeman being stabbed in the back
and several of the attackers being wounded by shotgun fire. Andy said that the
riot police from all over the country had been flown in to help restore peace,
an uneasy peace at that. I ask him if he had written back and ask for combat
pay yet.
CAN WE SEND YOU ANYTHING ?
We have had many of you ask us if there is anything that we could use over there
that they could send from time to time. Someone once said, "you have not
because you ask not". Far be it that we should allow this condition to
go on.
