VOLUME 8; NO. 6 JUNE 1985
Dear Brethren;
Greetings in the name of the Lord
REPAIRS NEEDED ON &$t@(*(*t&%
Before I commence to begin to continue to write this newsletter let me share
with you how nice it is to be able to compose and write this on my Xerox Memorywriter
typewriter. Approximately on May 17th I turned the Memorywriter on and all I
got was a flashing Christmas tree of lights on the front panel of the machine.
It was suppose to check and clear the systems and then stand by for new input.
One of the real facts of life I have found out about Xerox is "they love
to sell but leave much to be desired when you need service".
When we first brought the Memorywriter back to PNG from the States, Singapore was the only place who would answer my requests for repair information. This is the first major problem I have had. I had talked with Xerox in New Zealand when we were there and they now have the ability to repair my equipment. I called them about the problem. After five telephone calls talking with over seven people I was finally told that I would have to contact Australia who have the service contract for the PNG area. OK, after three phones calls to Sydney I finally talked with a serviceman who knew what I was talking about. I had decided the problem was in the Memory circuit board. He concurred that it was probably so. I had to send the $500. down for the new board before they would send the item up. They were to send the board up express air mail on the 22nd of May. (They said.) The postmark was 27th May. But I did finally received the board, replaced it in the machine and lo-and-behold, "It works". It's so nice to know that the course I am taking on Micro-computer repair is paying off.
FAMILY NEWS
Jason was baptized on March 28th. He had for some time been talking about it
but it's hard for us as parents to know when they really know what they are
doing. We are so happy.
Terasa continues to be our sporty personality in the family. Even though she does not have as much opportunity to participate in sporting events as she did in primary school she excels when she does. During May she was involved in a meet which was attended by all the high school age kids in the Eastern Highlands Province. She competed in the junior group, 15 years and under. She finished first in the high jump and third in the 100 meter dash. The following week she competed in a meet to determine participants in the national titles. She competed in the sub-junior group (14 and under) and won the high jump with a spring-sprong-leap of 4 feet 5 inches. Those who qualified in the Senior division had their way paid to Port Moresby for the National Titles. Terasa, even though she qualified, would have had to pay her own way. She is looking forward to New Zealand where she will be able to do more sporting activities. (Have you ever thought how hard it would be to do athletics by correspondence course ?)
As we have begun to prepare for our departure from PNG in July we have been dispensing with our flocks and animals. Things are really quiet around here now with the absence of: 35 layer chickens, 200 quail, over 10 assorted parrots, and the four tree kangaroos. The chickens and quail being sold. The birds given to a local aviary (where tourists go). The tree kangaroos were given to a government run sanctuary at Baiyer River outside of Mt Hagen.
PRINTING UPDATE
During the month of April we set a new monthly record for output. We printed
over 283,100 sheets of literature. The previous record had been set in May '82
when 252,500 sheets were printed. During May we printed only 113,200 sheets.
This included a reprint of 2000 copies of the 145 page Topical Index in Pidgin
English.
THE MESAS TO BIBLE SCHOOL
For several years Jab and I have worked very close ever since his decision to
quit working as a motor mechanic. He wanted to do more work for the Lord. We
had talked of him training with the printing presses and then he could run them
after we left. He wasn't comfortable with the presses so I bought a rubber stamp
making business and trained him in that. He was able to make a living doing
rubber stamps and was able to spend considerable time during work with the local
congregation and the Bible school here in Goroka. When Jab found out that there
was a Bible school in New Zealand he ask me to check it out and determine if
I thought he could make it there.
Due to the zeal that both Jab and Becky have shown for the Kingdom I had toyed with an idea of trying to find an opportunity for them to attend a Bible Training School in English, even in the States. I have been hesitant to do so because past experience has shown most students do not want to return to their native country after the school. The difference in the New Zealand school is that the students have to leave NZ after the 2 years of school. The government will only give a 2 year student visa. My recommendation to Jab and Becky was, YES !
I don't know of anybody more deserving of Bible Training than this family. After our return from NZ Jab and Becky have made a decision(Lord willing) to attend the two year program of Bible Training there in Tauranga, New Zealand. Becky will be giving up a good paying bank accountant job to attend. Jab has also been making preparations. He sold the rubber stamp business and realized enough to pay off all outstanding bills and to fix up their car. They should be able to sell the car in January and have enough money to buy another in NZ. With Jab and Becky preparing to make this move in January 1986 it has been decided to have us take Abraham back to the States with us. At present Abraham has a good grasp of 'hearing' English but doesn't have to 'speak' English. Both Jab and Becky are planning on attending the Bible school. Abraham will be old enough to attend kindergarten and thus needs some remedial 'spoken' English. So, we will be returning with a neapolitan lineup of children: VANILLA (Jason, blond), STRAWBERRY (Terasa) and CHOCOLATE (Abraham).
Upon our return in July we will be looking for congregations/individuals who will help support this family for their two years of Bible training in New Zealand. They will 'need $350-500 per month and $1500 for return airfares from PNG. Does this sound like something you would like to be part of? Please write to the Indiana address and let us know. Jab and- Becky plan to return after their schooling to his home area and begin the church there.
Please continue your prayers on our behalf that God will continue to bless us and prepare new opportunities of service in His Kingdom.
