October 1976
Dear Brethren:
Greetings in the name of Jesus. The Word of God continues
to reap souls. October and November saw one baptism at Dumun and
two baptisms and two placing membership at Bima Piau. We now have
37 Christians at Dumun, 37 at Bima Piau, 7 at Musul and 10 at
Kumogoko.
Bob Herndon arrived from the states in October to join
the workforce in Lae. November we saw the Joe Cannon's leave for
furlough and the Gary Hyer's leave Port Moresby to return to the
states..
Last month we talked about our new building at Dumun.
Last Sunday was the first time we worshiped there while it was
raining. This week they are putting a new roof on lt (thatch).
I still haven't figured out if whether it was raining harder inside
the building or outside.
In early October we sold our LandRover and had enough
money to buy Joe Cannon's Land Cruiser. By trading vehicles we
will be able to get spare parts cheaper and we have and newer
car by 7 years. The road here was just beating out Rover to death.
The night after we sold our Rover the new owners rolled it three
times off the road killing the driver. They then went to Curtis
Harrison's house demanding their money back because the vehicle
did not make it back up to their village by Chauve. I told him
to tell them that wasn't going to happen because they had signed
an agreement that when they drove off the property in Lae the
vehicle was their's for good or bad. It was their bad driving
that wrecked it. After they couldn't get us to reimburse them
they had the vehicle towed closer to their village and shoved
it off the mountain into a ravine.
We received a check for $500 last month for the request
we made toward horses. When we made the request in July horses
were available but now the market is high. We are still going
to try to find some still. This will give up the necessary horsepower
to get around where there are no roads.
Brethren, we are in desperate need of a duplicator. If anyone knows of one we
could get there or have the money to help fund one (approx.$500 US) please write
up. We are holding more village leadership schools now that the Bible School in
Lae is closed. Also coffee season is over and we are teaching more and more. With
these areas our need for printed Pidgin English material is increasing.
In October we also went into chicken raising. Chicken here in $2.50 per lb. and
eggs are $2.20 a doz. Go ahead and laugh, you who know chickens, but it's not
a laughing matter to round up 200 chicks in the rain because they don't have enough
sense to go into their house.
Kathy got bitten by a mosquito while in Lae a couple
of weeks ago and came down with dingy fever. Symptoms are cramping,
loss of appetite, depression and soreness which lasts from 5-10
days. No medicine to help it but pain killers. She is getting
better but she's still weak.
Please continue to pray for our works and our needs.
