VOLUME 4; No. 10                                                                                 OCTOBER 1981

Dear Brethren;

Greetings in the name of the Lord!

It's that time again, report time.

SPECIAL REPORT: Printing in PNG
This month I hope to inform you a little on what has been going-on in the printing work here and what the future holds in store.
In 1978 after trying to keep an old Multilith 1000 printing press in operation John Wallace and I decided to purchase new equipment to go ahead with what we could see as an open door through the printed page here in the native language of Pidgin English. Commercial printing is terribly high priced. In faith, John brought the equipment back from Port Moresby and we have been spinning it out ever since. During my last leave we bought additional equipment there in the states and now operate two presses all the time with a large press which can be used for large format printing.

Heh Mom! Aren't the printed sheets supposed to come out flatter than this????
Sure, printing is as easy as 1, 2, 3. My only problem is that I don't know how to count!

We have a Kroy Type machine which allows us to type up our headings without the trouble of letterpress. At the present time we buy all our paper in bulk from Australia.

John Wallace is shown here operating the Multilith 1250 press which we bought from Hemp Hall in Texarkana while we were home on leave.  John is printing the Pidgin English song book which the churches are using here in Papua New Guinea. 5,000 copies, 120 pages.
COLLATING IS JUST ONE OF THE MANY PROCESSES BEFORE THE FINAL FINISHED BOOKS ARE AVAILABLE FOR SALE. I MIGHT SAY THE MOST TEDIOUS ALSO.

PLENTY OF LITERATURE
With three full-time Bible Training school in operation, campaigns, workshops, Gospel Meetings, class material and local shows the amount of literature needed is substantial. Because of the high cost of printing equipment Goroka is the only center so far with enough equipment to operate a shop as they need to be operated. The other centers run off material on mimeograph machines for short run and quick copies. But anything big we run off. (We can even run copies cheaper than they can because our supplies are cheaper than stencils.)

The Lae team is looking at buying a press if they can find a good used one. This would relieve us of some of the short run copies they need.
Tens of thousands of tracts are distributed during local shows and hundreds of BCC's are mailed every week, all of which are printed here in Goroka.

When we first started we set up everything ourselves, but now request that most items be print ready when they come to us. This saves us time which we don't really have.

All in all the printing work is truly a team work with everyone doing what they do best. Typing, translating, writing, correcting, proof-reading, art work, collating, packing or just turning on the press switch,, or keeping the equipment in repairs.

MATERIAL PRODUCED
So far we have herded the following through the presses:
over 500,000 tracts and handouts leaflets
20,000 BCC'S; over 50 different booklets;
1- 300 page Topical Index in Pidgin English;
3,000 copies of the Pidgin English Song Book (5,000 more in the process now);
over 100 different outline books;
1,000's & 10,000's of sheets of Bible class material.

KEEP ON KEEPING ON !!!!!
SEEN HERE ARE A NUMBER OF THE BOOKS, AND BOOKLETS WHICH HAVE BEEN PRODUCED THUS FAR. NEEDLESS TO SAY A VERY SMALL NUMBER.
DOWN BELOW ARE A SERIES OF TRACTS WHICH HAVE BEEN PRODUCED AND USED HERE IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA. THEY WERE DONE IN VARIOUS COLORS.
